About Sceptre of Shalimar:
SCEPTRE OF SHALIMAR is a Fantasy Role Playing Game and Editor/Construction Set that I (Seth Hopkinson) am currently programming. It is similar to the early Ultimas, Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, Lunar, or any of the many other 2D Top-View game console FRPGs out there. If you like this type of game, then you are really going to love Sceptre of Shalimar! Check out the screenshots page for a preview. You may also download the latest version of the game by clicking on the Downloads button in the frame above.
Sceptre of Shalimar immerses the player in a rich, detailed, Medieval Fantasy Role Playing Universe. The storyline is vague and unobtrusive at first, but as gameplay progresses more and more mysteries are solved until finally your true quest comes to light... The game will contain features enjoyed by any FRPG player, such as:
- Seven different worlds to explore, each virtually a game in itself.
- Dozens of weapons and armor, both ranged and melee.
- A multi-player party. Network support will allow multiple parties to play in the same game.
- Several Skills can be learned by players and are improved by use or schooling (once you find someone to teach you, that is!)
- Vehicles (Boat, Climbing Gear, ect) to cross certain terrains.
- Townspeople to talk to. Some have information. Some are there for fun. Some will join your party to help you in your quest.
- An easy-to-use magic system with several spells, plus the ability to enchant weapons and armor, and create magical items.
- Quests and a storyline that spans several worlds. Each world is complete with its own map, creatures, items, and in some cases its own money system. Things from one world can be taken into another. Free travel between worlds is possible at any time (once you find the proper items, that is).
- Classic "experience and levels" system with a twist: Mage levels are separate from Fighter Levels. I always thought it crazy that an adventurer learned new spells by killing off monsters!?!? In Sceptre of Shalimar, fighting makes you a better fighter. Using magic makes you a better mage.
The game is still in the very early stages of development. It is currently a Dos Application with 320x200 8-Bit (256-color) graphics and PC-Speaker sound.
Eventually, it will become a Win32/DirectX Application with 640x480 16-bit graphics, Digital Sound Effects, Midi Music, and Multi-Player/Network support.
